The Curatorial School was conceived by Raphael Vella in 2013 and its first edition was held at the Valletta campus of the University of Malta in 2014. It is organised by Valletta 2018 Foundation and is an intensive one-week programme with invited curators. It is intended for practitioners and students in a variety of related areas like the fine arts, art education, arts administration, curation and history of art. Maltese and international participants are offered a programme of lectures and workshops and are encouraged to present their own curatorial ideas and receive feedback from invited speakers. The themes chosen for the first four editions were ‘Politics, Publics, Pedagogies’ (2014), ‘Communities and Contexts’ (2015), ‘Curating the New’ (2016) and ‘Researching Curatorial Practices’ (2017). Curators have included: Maria Lind, Ine Gevers, Pam Meecham, Marina Wallace, Kit Hammonds, Mieke Bal, Rosie Cooper, Fulya Erdemci, Maren Richter, Simon Sheikh, Adam Budak, Paul Ardenne, Mai Abu ElDahab, Bassam ElBaroni, Mick Wilson, Sebastian Cichocki, Yuko Hasegawa, Nadim Samman, Suzanne Wallinga, Renate Buschmann, Antje Weitzel, Fumihiko Sumitomo, Alfredo Cramerotti and Michaela Crimmin.
